The International Union of Railways (UIC) included two types of refrigerated wagons in its proposals for standardized wagon types. The Standard 1 (St. 1) became the most frequently built refrigerator car to date. The state railways of Greece, Morocco, Italy, Switzerland, France, the Netherlands and Belgium procured examples of the St. 1. They ran on the German Federal Railways as privately owned cars from the Interfrigo company. Meat companies, breweries and grocery chains hired this refrigerated truck. A total of around 6,500 examples were built. In the 1960s and 1970s there was hardly a freight train without the reliable car. The ice chambers could be equipped with ice sticks by hand via end platforms.
