From 1971, the Deutsche Bundesbahn put 398 series locomotives of the BR 218 into service and used them on both passenger and freight trains. They are used on most non-electrified routes and reach a top speed of 140 km/h with an output of 1,840 kW.
The 218 series has gone through a number of color variants over time. The first 218s were delivered in the crimson red color scheme that is usual for diesel locomotives. From 1975 onwards, the colors ocean blue/beige determined the external appearance of the locomotives.
