In the 1960s, the E 03 series was created, the most powerful electric locomotive to date for use in passenger train traffic on the Deutsche Bundesbahn. From 1970 to 1974, a total of 145 series locomotives were built and officially designated as the 103.1 series. Due to their special shape and enormous performance, the 103s quickly became the DB's flagship.
Only two examples of the 103 series are preserved in working order at the DB Museum in Koblenz. The 103 113 in the condition with the red frame, which it was the first of its kind to receive in 1977. This machine is used on selected trips in front of the AKE-Rheingold.
