38-776Z Bachmann OO Gauge 20 Ton Anchor-Mounted Tank Wagons ‘Gulf’ (Set of 3) Running Numbers: 79 87 and 93 In 1960 Gulf Oil [GB] Limited acquired a small fleet of second hand 14 Ton Class B anchor-mounted tank wagons. The wagons had been built in the mid 1950s and what distinguished this fleet of wagons was the livery Gulf Oil painted them in. Traditionally at the time of acquisition the colour of the tank was dictated by the load in that Class A rail tanks for inflammable loads would have a pale grey or silver tank whereas class B rail tanks for non-inflammable loads would have black tanks. Gulf however painted their tank wagon fleet in the corporate colours of Blue with Orange writing and numbering despite them being used for the transportation of fuel oil. Ironically when Gulf started to acquire more modern tank wagons in the mid 1960s and later the livery was black. It isnt known how many second hand Anchor mounted tank wagons were purchased by Gulf in 1960 but numbers certainly ranged from at least 77 to 98. By the time the wagons were renumbered under the TOPS system 21 remained. The wagons represented in our triple pack are from the 1960s era and are numbered 79 87 and 93. Each wagon has small detail differences in positioning of wording numbers etc. A renumbered pack is also available as 77 82 and 98. We believe wagon number 84 survives at the Gloucester Warwickshire Railway. Suitable period:- Late 1950s - Early 1970s (Era 5/6)
