In May 1989, 1044.202 was delivered from SGP-Graz to ÖBB. The electrical part comes from Siemens. It is one of the five locomotives that were painted in the so-called checkerboard design.
The 1044 series is an electric universal locomotive that is suitable for both heavy express train and freight train service on flat land as well as on mountain routes. At the time it was put into service, it was the most powerful four-axle electric locomotive in the world and the showpiece of the Austrian Federal Railways until the Taurus was procured.
